Construction labourers perform physically demanding work, including site preparation, cleaning, loading/unloading materials, and supporting tradespeople (carpenters, plumbers) by erecting scaffolding, operating power tools, mixing concrete, and digging trenches. They are responsible for maintaining a safe, organized site, often handling hazardous materials along with site clean-up, and following instructions.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Site Preparation & Cleanup: Clearing rubble, cleaning spills, removing debris, and preparing the site for daily construction activities.
Material Handling: Loading, unloading, and moving construction materials (lumber, bricks, pipes) around the site.
Assisting Trades: Assisting skilled workers such as carpenters, masons, and electricians.
Structural Setup: Erecting and dismantling scaffolding, concrete forms, shoring, ramps, and barricades.
Operating Tools & Equipment: Using power tools (jackhammers, drills, saws), mixing concrete, and operating heavy machinery like bobcats or forklifts if certified.
Demolition & Excavation: Assisting with building demolition, digging trenches, and leveling earth.
Safety & Compliance: Following safety protocols, wearing protective gear, and reporting hazards to management.
Site Clean-up Everyone is part of the team to contribute to site clean-up at every level.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Movement of Heavy Materials Must be physically able to move and lift heavy construction materials along with physical stamina, to be able to work outdoors and stand for long periods of time in varied weather conditions.
Certifications: WHMIS (hazardous materials), fall protection, genie lift, confined spaces etc are an asset
